Two Students.
One Mission.

SheStands was founded by two high school students who refused to accept that self-defense was someone else's problem. Meet the women behind the movement.

HOW IT STARTED

WE SAW THE GAP.

WE DECIDED TO FILL IT.

"CONFIDENCE AND AWARENESS SHOULD BE DEVELOPED EARLY - BEFORE FEAR, SELF-DOUBT, OR SOCIAL PRESSURE TAKES HOLD"

— COLOMBA & AVA (the founders)

"

SheStands was founded by two high school students, Colomba Joulin-Batejat and Ava Grandinetti, who recognized a gap in access to self-defense education for girls and young women.

Through personal experience in martial arts and conversations with coaches, instructors, and female practitioners, we saw how many women are interested in learning how to protect themselves but feel discouraged by intimidating, male-dominated environments or a lack of early exposure.

Our "why" is rooted in safety, confidence, and access. Girls and women face higher risks of harassment and violence, yet self-defense training is often introduced too late — or not at all.

OUR WHY

WHAT DRIVES EVERYTHING WE DO

01

🛡️

SAFETY

Girls and women face disproportionately higher risks of harassment and violence. Self-defense is not a privilege, it is a foundational life skill every girl deserves access to.

02

💪

CONFIDENCE

When girls are given positive, supportive physical training experiences at a young age, they are more likely to carry those skills and confidence
into adulthood.  Early exposure changes everything.

03

🚪

ACCESS

By embedding our program within schools, we remove the transportation, financial, and social barriers that keep girls away from martial arts and self-defense training.

THE FACES BEHIND SHESTANDS

MEET OUR FOUNDERS

Two women. Two disciplines. One shared belief.

That every girl deserves to feel safe, strong, and confident.

FOUNDER & HEAD INSTRUCTOR

Hi! I’m Ava.

I’m a first-degree black belt in Mixed Martial Arts and have been training for over eleven years, along with two years of experience coaching younger students. Outside of training, I play water polo and enjoy staying active through sports. Through martial arts, I’ve seen how learning self-defense can build confidence at a young age, which is why helping create She Stands is so important to me.

Hi! I’m Colomba.

I have over two years of self-defense training specializing in Krav Maga, and I’m also a track and field athlete. I love athletics, leadership projects, and finding ways to create meaningful change. Being part of She Stands is important to me because I believe girls should have the opportunity to build confidence and learn to protect themselves early in life. Everyday, I bring strength, leadership, and global perspective to She Stands.
